Research abstract

Upgrades to a RANS Scalar fluctuation model (SFM) used to predict variations in turbulent Prandtl and Schmidt numbers in a scramjet combustor environment are proposed. Such upgrades will permit obtaining more accurate solutions leading to improved combustor designs. Experiments to be performed in Virginia Tech (and AFRL) facilities using existing models will be performed focused on SFM validation examining molecular weight and shock interaction effects. In Phase I, a GUI driven building-block data base (BBDB) tool was developed, containing basic data sets, solutions files, and specialized scripts to facilitate comparisons. In Phase II, a web-site and dedicated servers/hard drives will be configured to provide outside users with access to the BBDB tool, including CFD code specific interface routines. New data sets will be added, including the VT data and LES simulations providing scalar fluctuation statistics. Stand-alone modules which integrate the SFM equations will be developed for use with structured and UNS codes used by AFRL, providing the spatial variations of Prt and Sct corresponding to AFRL code solution files. AFRL will be provided with unlimited access to the BBDB tool during this Phase II program, and with the SFM modules for use with their CFD codes.
