Research abstract

Phase I of this effort proposes to examine more realistic propagation channel models/techniques that reduce MUOS signal fading and support an improved MUOS/UFO communications performance simulator. These techniques include the effects of polarization and antenna gain, user transitions into and out of shadowing, examining MIMO techniques and using more realistic ionospheric scintillation models. This new combined MUOS/UFO communications simulator will aid the planning of military UHF communications networks worldwide and can support the transition from UFO to MUOS.
