Research abstract
High flux flash X-ray systems provide unique methods of imaging ultra-fast events that cannot be captured using normal photographic techniques. X-ray images can be obtained in 20 to 50 nanoseconds, even through smoke, fire, and metal, and enable precise recording of details of test events under the harshest conditions. X-ray based techniques thus provide unique means to track hypervelocity projectile parameters. Unfortunately, current film-based imaging systems require an extensive calibration process, excessive time and space within an experimental chamber, and result in errors in data analysis. To address these issues we propose to develop a low cost, high precision, large area X-ray imaging system based on a novel scintillator coupled to a high-resolution digital readout. System components will be low cost, portable, rugged and modular, and except for the passive scintillator, will be located external to the chamber to minimize space requirements. When completed, this system will provide instantaneous high-precision measurements of projectile orientation parameters, in a time-efficient manner. Our Phase I efforts met with resounding success, demonstrating the feasibility of measuring hypervelocity projectile parameters with the desired precision. Phase II research will build on this success to develop and deliver a turnkey system for DOD personnel.
