Research abstract

Lithium niobate (LN) is a unique material with remarkable optical properties, making it essential for various technologies like fiber optic communications, lasers, and sensors. However, the U.S. currently relies on foreign sources for high-quality LN crystals, posing supply chain risks. RMD Inc. proposes to develop a domestic production capability for LN crystals using a proven technique. This effort will leverage RMD's expertise in growing high-purity crystals for demanding applications. In Phase I, RMD will establish a crystal growth process for LN, producing small-scale crystals and evaluating their quality. This will involve characterizing the crystals' optical, electrical, and structural properties using advanced measurement techniques. The successful completion of this project will pave the way for the development of a reliable domestic source of high-quality LN crystals, supporting critical U.S. industries and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers. This initiative will also enable the development of next-generation photonic devices with improved performance and lower cost, benefiting applications in telecommunications, sensing, and quantum technologies.
