Research abstract

Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) will demonstrate the feasibility of technology that can improve fuel efficiency and increase vehicle availability for military tactical and non-tactical wheeled vehicles. FTI will combine principles of real-time prognostic health management that analyze vehicle health states with Reliability Centered Maintenance that recommends the appropriate corrective action. The technology provides algorithms and methodologies that synergistically monitor fuel utilization and vehicle health resulting in optimum fuel efficiency and vehicle operation. FTI’s research uses data-derived statistical models that function with existing sensors and data sources and be easily extended to multiple vehicle configurations. The resulting system will: • Alert vehicle operators on vehicle and fuel utilization health, enabling them to apply techniques that will improve fuel use. • Advise vehicle operators of degrading conditions that will result in poor fuel consumption or vehicle operations • Notify maintenance personnel of vehicle health problems requiring action to return the vehicle to normal conditions with improved fuel utilization. This Phase I effort extends FTI’s research into prognostic assessment of system health. Phase II will demonstrate a prototype of the models developed during Phase I and will identify limitations and areas requiring investigation in applying the technology to a variety of vehicle configurations.
