Research abstract

The goal of the proposed research by NextGen Aeronautics, the University of Nebraska Lincoln and Penn State is to develop an impact resistant carbon-fiber composite missile skin using a fracture toughening self-repairing nanocomposite technology. NextGen will demonstrate substantial increase in interlaminar fracture toughness as well as matrix crack resistance by combining ultra-thin continuous nanofibers with nanostructures to reinforce layers and impart self-healing properties into the composite matrix. The matrix consists of a mendomer self-healing polymer combined with a low (<5%) volume fraction of nanostructures. The objective of Phase I is demonstration of impact damage mitigation. The cost and weight of composite structure are kept low by using nanostructures to accomplish increased impact toughness while not decreasing payload. Improvements in fracture and impact properties will be shown experimentally. We will also develop analytical models that can easily be incorporated into software used by system integrators. In Phase II, the NextGen team will demonstrate automated composite manufacturing techniques using a filament winding approach and perform component level testing. The team will also incorporate the technology into a working prototype and partner with Raytheon Missile Systems to transition the technology to military munitions and advanced airframe structural platforms.
