Research abstract

This effort develops a modular Survivable Solar Array (SSA) for improved protection against high radiation and thermal environments. We incorporate advanced survivability techniques into conventional solar panel technology to protect against Ground Based Lasers and improve radiation shielding. The SSA comprises four hardened assemblies – front-side shield, high thermal capability photovoltaic assembly, hardened thermal radiator, and shielded structural support – which together with countermeasures, will be developed to the highest level of survivability and performance (Watts/kg, Watts/m2 and $/Watt). The Phase I effort starts with a threat engagement and survivability analysis of SSA Module design options incorporating various combinations of passive hardening schemes, in combination with active approaches including array turning, retraction, or shutters. The enhancement of radiation shielding achieved through laser hardening is evaluated. Anticipatory countermeasures based on knowledge of the threat origin as well as responsive measures using threat activated response are evaluated for further enhancement. Concentrator and planar conceptual designs are analyzed, and the best approach is selected for design development and fabrication of a test panel. The SSA uses a standardized modular approach which benefits scale-up, qualification traceability and maintainability. The Phase II effort will complete the detailed design, perform survivability testing and demonstrate a kilowatt-sized multi-module panel.
