Research abstract

In response to this solicitation, Quallion is proposing the introduction of lithium ion battery technology elements into a reserve type battery application. Lithium ion rechargeable batteries have been in commercial use since 1995 when Sony Corporation first introduced them into their product lines. Since that time, lithium ion batteries have grown to become one of the most popular types of battery for portable electronics, with one of the best energy-to-weight ratios, no memory effect, and a slow loss of charge when not in use. Although originally intended for consumer electronics, lithium-ion batteries are now growing in popularity with the defense and aerospace industries because of their high energy density. In addition, Quallion will leverage off its own lithium-ion cell production capability and introduce a more controllable and reliable process in manufacturing a reserve type battery.
