Research abstract

Propagation Research Associates, Inc., (PRA) proposes to develop multi-spectral track correlation algorithms to improve boost phase track radar-to-radar and optical-to-radar track correlation for multiple sensor fusion. These algorithms will enable enhanced effectiveness in track correlation subroutines and enable effective sensor fusion, thereby increasing the coverage area of BMD space-based optical sensor and forward-based radar components. The proposed algorithms will exploit unique data available from the Total Atmospheric Effects Mitigation System, developed by PRA for MDA and the US Air Force, to address emerging challenges to current BMD sensors and systems. The approach accounts for spatial and temporal correlation in scintillation parameters to refine track filter performance and object classification schemes. The Phase I objectives are to investigate and evaluate atmospheric effects mitigation algorithms applied to boost phase tracking and correlation and to plan Phase II concept that will demonstrate algorithm components in a test environment and full algorithm performance in a high fidelity simulation and experiment. The currently envisioned Phase II validation will include simulation testing of the Phase I algorithms in a validated demonstration tool, such as the Ballistic Missile Defense Benchmark or the Lockheed Martin Integrated Missile Defense Test Bed.
