Research abstract

Mapping and tracking of fatigue damage using time-sequenced MWM-Array imaging is proposed. In Phase I, the capability to produce reliable 2-dimensional images of damage evolution was clearly demonstrated. In Phase II, this capability will be enhanced substantially by developing time-space processing/filtering methodologies for early stage fatigue detection and monitoring the evolution of fatigue damage. The Phase II focus will be on H-1 and H-53 rotorcraft. In Phase II, we will focus primarily on mapping and tracking the damage of aluminum alloy dynamic components, with a limited focus on titanium components. This program will include the generation of empirical and/or model-derived databases of damage evolution behavior. The goal is to develop an adaptive life management methodology that is easily ported to new component applications without substantial cost. This will require methods for recalibration of databases using limited laboratory coupon testing combined with field/depot experience/learning. This Phase II will be supported by a major rotorcraft OEM as a subcontractor.
