Research abstract

High temperature, high energy density capacitors will serve a critical technology path enabling military applications such as power pulse weaponry, power conditioning devices, as well as many aerospace, automotive and petroleum applications. With DoD’s next-generation initiatives toward electrically-powered propulsion systems, capacitor performance limits needs to be much enhanced, particularly with introduction of high-temperature stable systems. Most current capacitors are polymer-based with limited energy storage capacity (< 5 J/cc) and temperature limitations (<125°C). Dielectric films with higher temperature capabilities and increased energy storage are needed. Phase I effort clearly demonstrated unique capabilities of Applied Thin Films, Inc. (ATFI’s) inorganic-based aluminum phosphate dielectric films with exceptional high temperature stability, high, frequency-stable dielectric constant, and high breakdown strength. In Phase II, in collaboration with a prime contractor, ATFI will engage in further developing this novel concept and scale-up the process amenable for production. Prototype capacitors will be built and tested for relevant properties.
