Research abstract

A deployable bridge design concept is proposed that is capable of supporting a 68 Ton M1A2 tank over a span of 50m. This concept is easily configured to accept alternate combinations of span length and vehicle loads. The structural design has adequate strength for all load cases and adequate stiffness in the static and dynamic modes of deformation that are important to operational performance. Key to the success of the bridge concept is the use of materials that exhibit high strength and stiffness. Tensile members are generally constructed of UHMWPE ropes with compressive members made of carbon fiber composites. The suitability of these materials will be demonstrated in Phase I by extensive computer simulation. The structural system can be compressed into a compact package for storage and transportation in a C-130 aircraft. In one proposed version of the bridge system a pneumatic bladder system is used to assist deployment in both short and long span applications. This option, as well as other issues, will be addressed in a design specification that will be developed early in Phase I. This specification will help guide design development in a controlled way towards a design goal that is clearly defined by the Army.
