Research abstract

Under the proposed effort, the research team will develop a robust, generalizable method for digital engineering design and multiphysics optimization of periodic microarchitectures enabled by additive manufacturing (AM) processes. Optimization methods will enable user definition of constraints and objectives tailored to the form and function of the component of interest and to the capabilities of selected AM printers for selected alloys. Optimization methods will also uniquely allow simultaneous consideration of multiphysics optimization constraints, such as metrics related to both heat transfer and mechanical performance. Feasibility of the innovative design optimization approach will be demonstrated via selection of a suitable high-entropy alloy and a notional component application for Navy applications, subsequent microarchitecture optimization, and verification of improved outcomes through subcomponent manufacturing and experimental material property characterization. Phase II efforts will focus on integration of optimized microarchitectures into component geometries, definition of design best practices, and further experimental testing of optimized metamaterial and component performance and reliability.
