Research abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) and its team member, Aerojet, propose to synthesize a range of novel 1,2,3-triazole based energetic materials with low sensitivity, good energy and good density. During a Phase I program, PSI developed a 2 step synthesis for a 1,2,3-triazole from low cost precursors. This triazole is very adaptable to a wide range of functionalization to produce plasticizer, oxidizer and binder chemistries with desirable energetic properties. During the Phase II effort, PSI will implement its strategy for the synthesis of four plasticizers, two oxidizers, and two polymeric binders, all based upon the low cost 1,2,3-triazole chemistry developed on the Phase I effort. Depending upon the outcome of the synthetic effort, the IM and energetic properties of the materials successfully produced, and their projected cost; select triazole materials will be scaled up for formulation and motor testing. The formulation and motor testing will take place at Aerojet Corp. A Letter of Support has been provided by 3M Corporation and they may assist with the scale-up of the triazole chemistry.
