Research abstract

The proposed work will extend the studies conducted during Phase I to an actual demonstration of weapons typing assessment using data available at the Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) X-Lab at the Joint National Integration Center (JNIC). The SciTec and JHU/APL team will develop a weapons typing assessment module for the Hit assessment, Weapons typing, and Kill Assessment experiment (HaWK-X) that will extract features from data available at C2BMC. The goal will be to assess the class of reentry vehicle weapons type from features observed by current or future sensing systems with the highest priority on nuclear payload determination. Increased confidence in weapons classification will be achieved from the fusion of feature information from the time of intercept through reentry. Modeling and simulation will be incorporated to increase functionality, and a graphical user interface for displaying pertinent information to the global engagement manager will be developed to aid situational awareness and consequence mitigation. The capability will be demonstrated in the X-Lab during actual MDA missile defense tests. Additional off-line testing will be conducted to evaluate current sensor capabilities, recommend value-added enhancements to existing sensors, and future sensing capabilities needed to increase weapons typing confidence.
