Research abstract

Kinetic Metallization is low temperature deposition process that can be used to deposit specific powder formulations onto representative gas turbine engine parent materials for the purpose of dimensional and performance restoration. Additionally, this technology can be used to deposit wear, corrosion, and oxidation resistant coatings onto gas turbine engine components with superior performance compared to thermal spray methods. The objective of this Phase I research is to demonstrate the feasibility of depositing WC-Co, Cr3Cr2-NiCr, and IN718 coatings onto representative Ni and Ti based alloys using the Kinetic Metallization process. Evaluations of the deposited material and substrates will be conducted with respect to their microstructure, thermal stress and fatigue characteristics. The absence of phase evolution is particularly desired whether they be metal-oxides, intermetallics, or any other micro-structural feature typically associated with high temperature processes.
