Research abstract

This program is tasked with developing a high power RF source in the Terahertz frequency range. The Phase I program developed the preliminary design for a gyrotron producing 5-10 kW pulses of RF power from 600 GHz to 2 THz. The gyrotron operates with a pulsed magnetic field up to 40 T. Pulse widths exceeding 500 microseconds and repetition rates exceeding 2 Hz appear feasible. The average power is limited by the thermal capability of the pulsed magnet. The Phase I developed the preliminary power supply design for the magnet. In the Phase II program, a prototype gyrotron and magnet will be built and tested.
