Research abstract

The emerging field of terahertz imaging and spectroscopy offers great promise in physical security, military, drug enforcement and pharmaceuticals. Progress in THz applications awaits development of a high power THz laser, and a fast, sensitive focal plane array. Both of these are under development at Zyberwear. This work proposed here is development of a new class of laser operating at terahertz wavelengths. Existing THz lasers are capable of several watt output in a mixed-mode (broadband) operation, but at very low efficiencies. The proposed laser is projected to have a power output in excess of 10 W, an electrical to optical efficiency approaching 1%, and a very low noise, stable, narrowband, tunable, low divergence output beam.
