Research abstract

Although the Army uses airborne computer generated forces (CGFs) in simulation environments, most CGFs are not autonomous or interactive enough to be directed by a controller. Full simulation capability requires detailed, doctrinally correct CGFs that can be controlled directly by airspace managers. Further, simply introducing a controller-interaction capability into a single existing CGF system will serve only a narrow set of users. Soar Technologyteamed with SAIC, Dynetics, and Adacelproposes to develop a Controllers Intelligent Assistant by combining state of the art speech interfaces, intelligent agents, and interactive systems. This Assistant enhances the capabilities of CGFs by providing an intelligent mediator between the controller and those CGFs, managing the difference between what the controller needs and what the CGFs can do. Our proposed work consists of: (1) extending the R&D of Phase I into a detailed requirements specification and design; (2) exploiting the best of existing technology and methodologies identified in Phase I; (3) researching and developing new technologies to fill gaps that were identified in Phase I; and (4) evaluating a prototype implementation with representative users in test simulation exercises.
