Research abstract

Although the Army uses airborne computer generated forces (CGFs) in simulation environments, most CGFs are not autonomous or interactive enough to be directed by a controller. Full simulation capability requires detailed, doctrinally correct CGFs that can be controlled directly by airspace managers, such as air traffic controllers, air traffic services, or even ground commanders operating in a combat zone. Further, the military already employs a wide range of CGF behavior systems with different levels of autonomy, fidelity, and interactivity. Simply introducing a controller-interaction capability into a single existing CGF system will serve only a narrow set of users. Therefore, we propose to develop a Generic Controller Interface that will enable a range of existing CGF systems to be controlled directly by an Air Traffic Controller through speech or data, with minimal change to the extant simulation systems, and that will reduce the manpower and cost of running distributed simulations.
