Research abstract

U.S Navy spends a huge amount of money to address corrosion maintenance problems for various air platform material such as aluminum alloys, steel and magnesium alloys. Improving corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys may improve 50% life-cycle costs and provide a number of performance improvements. Aspen Systems proposes to design a superior and economic coating technique for magnesium alloy in order to increase its corrosion resistance. In our Phase I program, we will identify a superior corrosion resistant magnesium alloy composition and successfully perform the coating using innovative plasma immersion Ion deposition (PIID) technique to obtain defect free stable adherent coating on magnesium. We will also evaluate the coating and perform extensive corrosion testing of the magnesium coated alloy
