Research abstract

Tactical Language Training, LLC, in collaboration with MYMIC, LLC, proposes to develop a portable cultural knowledge acquisition device called Wiki-berry, which service members can take into the field. The device will be capable of recording a variety of media, including voice, documents, images, and video. It will employ a user interface that is suitable for field use, as well as a rugged design that facilitates its use in harsh environments. It will enable users to classify and annotate collected cultural material, to make the material easier to organize, validate, and maintain. It will also automate the process of uploading the cultural material to a Wiki-compatible server, for further organization, analysis, and presentation. We anticipate that many users of the proposed handheld knowledge acquisition device will not be skilled anthropologists. We therefore plan to build templates and step-by-step procedures into the Wiki-berry that will guide users through the data collection process, to maximize the utility of the collected data. We also will build guides and assists into the Wiki-compatible database in order to facilitate the organization and validation of the collected data.
