Research abstract

The GWOT requires Special Operations Forces to operate in a variety of environments and rely heavily on the support of local forces while operating in a wide variety of countries. In order to consistently leverage this support as well as understand the underlying motivations and influences of both friends and foes, warfighters need to understand the particular aspects of the culture where they are operating and be able to react to changing circumstances. Trident systems proposes to build a cultural intelligence semantic wiki that will enable warfighters to have access to near real-time information and provide that capability on a compact “Blackberry” style PDA device. It will have an intuitive interface that will access, update and create text, image and multimedia information through a secure wiki framework. This system will be able to interact with the wiki through both commercial wireless network protocols such as 802.11 and tactical communications networks such as PRC-148G. The proposed Phase I effort will focus on developing an accurate CONOPS description, capturing operational and functional requirements and developing a conceptual top level design. In addition, Trident will prototype key pieces of the wiki to prove the concept and provide insight into the overall design.
