Research abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. and its subcontractors, Corvid Technologies, Systems Engineering Group, Inc. and Millennium Engineering and Integration, Inc., propose to develop a technology base that can be exploited to analyze the RF and EO/IR signatures of post impact debris fields resulting from a KW/target engagement to: (1) identify any lethal object that may be present in the debris field, and (2) characterize such objects so that robust second shot discrimination algorithms can be developed. The proposed program is composed of five tasks: (1) requirements analysis, (2) methodology development, (3) damage and signature predictions, (4) assessment and evaluation, and (5) development of a technology transfer plan and recommendation of a Phase III program. Key parts of the program include extensive simulation of damage and the post impact characteristics and dynamics of the resulting debris, and the utilization of these results to synthesis RF and EO/IR signatures. The results of this modeling and analysis will be extensively compared with Aegis BMD FM data to anchor the models and evaluate their practical utility. Throughout the program PSI proposes to work closely with MDA and their prime contractors to ensure that the developed technology will meet the needs of the developing BMDS.
