Research abstract

Conventional air-vehicle designs are subjected to a well-set system/operational requirements. Scramjet-powered vehicle (SPV) design however enters an unprecedented level of multidisciplinary synergy to achieve its operational requirements. Through a convoluted and inverse design strategy for SPV, its propulsion system inlet design largely dictates the airframe geometry. Further, it is complicated by TPS and aeroelastic requirements. These considerations mandate a drastic paradigm shift from conventional design. Thus a new concept of low-fidelity prediction/high-fidelity correction (LFP/HFC) design/optimization procedure is introduced. While rapid conceptual design adopts lower-fidelity software tools, high-fidelity methodologies, CFD/FEM, enter through subsequent design cycles as required. Therefore, SPV designers gain an insightful understanding of the multidisciplinary physics that lead to a compromised SPV design. Following this design paradigm, ZONA Team in Phases II will fully establish an Aero-Servo-Thermal-Propulso-Elastic (ASTPE) methodology and procedure, integrating it with the waverider inlet/propulsion system as a viable "conceptual-to-preliminary" tool for hypersonic SPVs. The LFP/HFC design/optimization procedure along with all developed modules will be housed in an ASTPE Desktop Design Environment (ADDE) with a powerful data management engine (eBASE) and GUI system as a convenient, conceptual-to-preliminary, hypersonic vehicle design/optimization tool. A SED-like vehicle will be configured as a baseline SPV demonstrator of the ADDE.
