Research abstract

The U. S. Navy has determined that the development of Multiple Source Capable Miniature Directional Acoustic Receivers could help provide the enhanced performance necessary to operate in the unforgiving acoustic environment of littoral waters. Dense fields of miniature receivers, in conjunction with active sources, could achieve multi static detection capability sufficient to counter the emerging threat of quiet diesel-electric submarines. Phase I of SBIR N05-008 established the feasibility of achieving DIFAR hydrophones and suspension systems that will meet the program goal of packaging the miniature receivers in the MJU-10/B form factor. Phase II takes significant additional steps towards providing a fleet ready miniature DIFAR sonobuoy. Early in Phase II prototypes of the MJU/10 packaging concept will be built to evaluate HERO survivability, launch compatibility, and safe aircraft launch. Testing will be conducted at contractor and Navy facilities to determine performance of hydrophones, electronics, suspension systems, floats, air and water descent systems. Phase II concludes with air drop testing of prototype sonobuoys demonstrating legacy DIFAR performance in the miniature form factor. In Phase III buoys will be developed and tested with fully miniaturized electronics, multiple depth capability, multi channel transmitters, and other enhancements.
