Research abstract

Sonobuoy size and weight are critical issues for ASW helicopters and for the ships from which they operate. The Multiple Source Capable Miniature Directional Acoustic Receiver (MSCMDAR), sized to fit the MJU-10 size (2.0 inches by 2.5 inches by 8.0 inches) will allow the MH-60R helicopter to carry sufficient sonobuoys to deploy a multistatic active acoustic field. Additionally it will provide a receiver capability to support ALFS, AN.SQS-53C, AN/SQS-56 and DICASS acoustic sources. This Phase II SBIR proposal addresses the further development of technologies identified in Phase I including the design, fabrication, calibration and demonstration of a single-crystal two axis directional sensor plus hydrophone with an integral compass and integral buoy electronics. The miniature sensor will be integrated with a sonobuoy suspension and deployment and hydromechanical performance will be demonstrated. The full extent of deployment issues will be addressed, including an innovative launcher development and demonstration, compact inflation system and a ram inflated ballute. A power efficient RF link will be demonstrated which includes error correction code and GMSK modulation. Additionally in water deployment will be developed and demonstrated in the laboratory. A marketing strategy will be developed to transition the technology to other potential customers beyond the ASW community.
