Research abstract

Helmet-Mounted Displays (HMDs) do not allow the pilot to raise or lower a tinted visor when moving from a high to low light level condition. A variable transmittance visor was requested to solve this problem. The EclipseView™ is well suited for light modulation applications. The EclipseView™ modulates light intensity by changing color under an applied electric field (approx 1.5V). The optical density of the EclipseView™ may be continuously varied over a wide range by varying the applied voltage. This process is reversed by changing the polarity of the applied electric field. The EclipseView™ has high level of manufacturability. In Phase I, Eclipse evaluated and identified performance criteria, tailored the Eclipse Variable Electrochromic Devices (EclipseView™) towards the criteria, evaluated and identified a commercial coating deposition system capable of depositing the ECDs on up to 10 flight visors simultaneously. Eclipse worked with Rockwell Collins, a leader in Helmet Mounted Displays with fielded technology on the F22 fighter to specify drive electronic parameters for system integration. In Phase II Eclipse will expand upon the tailoring the EclipseView™ technology demonstrated in Phase I and integrate the technology into a prototype helmets for testing.
