Research abstract

The LCAC carries cargo, vehicles and personnel on an open deck that is exposed to wind, saltwater spray, and FOD. This proposal outlines the development of an easily deployed, stowable deck cover that will protect the cargo deck and equipment from these elements. Additionally, this system can be expanded to allow for future use on the proposed Joint Maritime Assault Connector (JMAC) vessel. Vertigo is uniquely qualified to develop this new system. We bring over 20 years of experience in inflatable high-pressure airbeams and rapid deployment shelters. We have performed a significant part of our airbeam research and development under the SBIR program. This proposal is a logical progression of that R & D. Vertigo is confident that we offer a significant improvement in stowage volume and weight, deployment and strike times, and reduced complexity compared to traditional rigid frame supported covers. This type of stowable airbeam deck cover system can be used on other naval and commercial vessels such as ferries, cargo vessels and cruise ships. This program will define beam end structural attachments and vessel interfaces, on-vessel stowage, inflation compressor mounting and power requirements, end closure design and operation, and long-term storage and transportation plans.
