Research abstract
The objective of this study is to make recommendations on the best approach(s) for the Defense and Intelligence Communities to adopt in relationship to Digital Rights Management (DRM). We will explore how to apply DRM technology to help achieve assured information sharing. Our emphasis will be in the areas of rights expression (i.e., the expression of permissions: constraints, requirements, and conditions, over the data assets) and the digital management of the aforementioned rights. Our goal is to identify a solution to support assured information sharing that will allow data producers, such as Warfighters, to dynamically share information while still retaining responsible control over who sees it and how it is further used and/or redistributed. We will seek to modify and adapt Rights Expression Languages (REL) such as Extensible Rights Markup Language (XrML) and Open Digital Rights Language (ODRL) to fit the taxonomies of the Defense and Intelligence communities. In Phase II a prototype/Engineering Development Model (EDM) called TrustShare would be developed on laboratory systems to demonstrate the feasibility of the design to meet the use cases identified in Phase I. Phase III will productize the technology to meet both military and commercial needs.
