Research abstract

Current steel ISO shipping containers are incompatible with RFID tracking. Steel containers are also labor intensive to produce, heavy, and susceptible to corrosion. By switching to a fiberglass reinforced composite, a new ISO container can be produced that will be lighter weight and corrosion resistant. Luna Innovations, along with its partners Strongwell and IPCT, will design a pultruded composite ISO container that is cost effective. The proposed container design will allow for the use of RFID tags, X-Ray screening and incorporation of sensors for health/structural monitoring. Luna will also leverage expertise in fire resistant composites, CB coatings/sensors, and wireless communications to incorporate these aspects into the feasibility study.
