Research abstract

Triton Systems, Inc. proposes development of a lightweight, low-cost, “Smart” intermodal shipping container (20 ft. ISO) capable of being tracked, traced, and inventoried. The Triton Smart Shipping Container (TSSC) will be hardened for chemical, biological, and nuclear attack and will meet critical DoD logistical requirements for In-Transit Visibility in operational theaters. The unique advanced composite materials to be employed will provide passive decontamination of chemical warfare agents (CWAs), biological warfare agents (BWA), and radiological (RA) attack – collectively CBR [Chem-Bio-Radiation]. The Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) capability of the shipping containers will enable logistical tracking of the container movements. Triton’s CBR protection approach for the TSSC integrates a set of CBR-decontaminating additives into the composite resins which are compatible with all aspects of composite fabrication (layup, infiltration, and curing), are environmentally-benign, and do not compromise the excellent structural properties of the finished composite structure. The most cost-effective approach to significant weight savings (>40%) for TSSC is to fabricate using polymer matrix composite (PMC) materials. Triton will engineer and optimize the advanced thermoplastic or thermoset PMC materials to meet the performance requirements and minimize weight using unit cost as the primary design driver.
