Research abstract

There is a need within the military for a light aircraft that is capable of medical re-supply and evacuation in order to fully exploit the Army’s Life Support for Trauma and Transport litter. In light of recent advances in technology, it is now plausible to consider the use of an Unmanned (or Uninhabited) Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for this mission. UAVs are already in service for other missions such as reconnaissance, communications, and strike, and their use is expected to grow in the coming decades. UAVs can be sent into hostile areas without the risk to air crews. A UAV with a high degree of autonomy can also reduce manpower requirements since it would not require a full-time pilot or remote operator. This proposal will address the design of a UAV for medical resupply and evacuation. Key issues include autonomous guidance, including landing and takeoff, and communication and coordination between the UAV and personnel on the ground. UAVs offer the possibility of a more flexible response to the medical needs brought about by the type of warfare that has emerged in recent conflicts, as well as the potential to reduce costs.
