Research abstract

Defense Holdings, Inc. has developed an innovative approach to replacing existing carbon brushes that are used to transfer electrical power across a sliding interface. This technology, employing a brush constructed of hair-fine metal fibers, promises to provide significant improvements to the efficiency of current transfer, with attendant reductions in electrical noise, sliding surface heating, and wear of both the brush and sliding surface. Metal fiber brushes are more conductive than carbon brushes. They are physically compliant and eliminate carbon dusting which—when combined with hydrocarbon or other common solutions in the operating environment—risks prop fires and other catastrophic failures. Metal fiber brushes also have excellent wear rates when compared to carbon brushes. This helps assure that metal fiber brushes will have a longer useful life and will require little to no preventative maintenance when compared to carbon brushes.
