Research abstract

The operating temperature and efficiency of turbine engines is limited by the thermal properties of the coatings that are used to protect the underlying superalloys. Additionally, surface deposits that penetrate through the thermal barrier coating (TBC) system cause hot corrosion and premature failure of the coating. In order to extend the operational temperature and life of the turbines, a systems approach to develop new or improved coatings are required. The proposed effort by Materials Modification, Inc., will develop a nanocomposite coating system that is designed by taking into consideration the thermodynamic compatibility of the bond coat and the TBC along with minimizing thermal transport through the coating.
