Research abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) has fabricated two electrochromic (EC) devices during a Phase I SBIR program. Several EC infrared reflectors were fabricated using electroactive polymers and a series of EC infrared beam combiners were constructed using tungsten oxide (WO3) thin films. These devices switched between states in as little as 1 second with contrasts of up to 60% reflection. A proposed Phase II program will extend the Phase I results to develop a fully functional EC beam combiner system for integration with a 20 K Space Simulation Test chamber at Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC). The beam combiner is planned to operate with bandpass of from 5 to 15 microns and contrast from 50/50 to 90/10 transmission. Total switching time between states, including any device heating and cooling required, will take less than 24 hours. System demonstrations at the 50% and 85% build level will be performed for the AEDC staff. The complete system, including PC interface, control software and EC device hardware, will be delivered at the end of the Phase II program. Phase III opportunities will be promoted through the use of scientific publications and presentations to the appropriate audience.
