Research abstract

In modern military operations, swift and accurate decision-making is essential, and advanced eye-tracking technology plays a pivotal role, particularly in Command and Control functions. Eye tracking has proven highly effective in Extended Reality (XR) environments, enhancing immersive training through Virtual and Augmented Reality while contributing to the development of real-time adaptive systems. However, traditional camera-based eye-tracking systems often lack the precision required for dynamic military settings due to their reliance on stable head positions and specific lighting conditions. To overcome these limitations, Epitome Research and Innovations Inc. (ERI), in collaboration with leading experts from universities and research institutions, is undertaking a three-phase SBIR project to develop smart contact lenses equipped with advanced eye-tracking capabilities. These lenses align with the vision of the Ground Vehicle System Center, which envisions contact lenses as intuitive input devices integrated into multilayered XR User Interfaces for Head-Mounted Displays. By allowing soldiers to interact with virtual elements through gaze direction, this technology makes interactions faster, more instinctive, and more efficient. This innovation marks a significant leap in military capability, combining cutting-edge eye tracking with the evolving needs of modern military training and operational environments. The smart contact lenses have applications that extend beyond XR interaction. Use cases include: Real-Time Biomonitoring for Cognitive and Performance Enhancement, where metrics like pupil size and blink rate are monitored during short-term training to assess cognitive load and performance; Continuous Biometric Tracking During Extended Missions, offering uninterrupted physiological and cognitive monitoring over 24 hours or more; Sleep Quality Monitoring with Overnight Wear, enabling recovery insights during rotational "naps" or extended rest periods.
