Research abstract

In modern military operations, swift and accurate decision-making is crucial, and the adoption of eye tracking technology, particularly in Command and Control functions, plays a key role. This technology is highly effective in Extended RealityĀenvironments, enhancing immersive training through Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, and contributing to the development of real-time adaptive systems. Traditional camera-based eye tracking systems often lack the necessary precision for dynamic military environments, as they require stable head positions and specific lighting conditions. To address this, Epitome Research and Innovations Inc., in collaboration with experts from various universities and research institutions, is embarking on a three-phase SBIR project.Ā The first phase of the project will demonstrate the feasibility of integrating these sensors into smart contact lenses. This innovation aligns with the vision of the Ground Vehicle System Center, which sees potential in using contact lenses as input devices within a multilayered XR User Interface for Head-Mounted Displays. This allows soldiers to interact with virtual elements by simply directing their gaze, making interactions quicker and more instinctive. The integration of this technology represents a significant advancement in military capabilities, merging state-of-the-art eye tracking with the evolving needs of military operations and training environments for both training optimization and cognitive monitoring.
