Research abstract

Physical Sciences, Inc. (PSI) proposes to demonstrate a dual emission lighting system that can operate near both the scotopic maximum sensitivity of 507 nm and the night vision goggle (NVG) radiant sensitivity maximum of ~825 nm (for non-visible). The switchable dual emission luminosity device is designed to be detected at up to 8 km at night using NVG during a zero visible emission mode, or at 1.6 km at night with unaided (scotopic) vision. Both emissive devices are based upon hybrid polymer active materials using conventional polymer light emitting device (pLED) construction. We will investigate both electro and photo luminescent mechanisms for each emitter to provide enhanced lifetime and efficiency. The Phase I program will produce a thin film device with dual emission. On a potential Phase I Option program, the thin film lighting system will be developed over a series of system level studies and initial construction, ultimately integrating power and electrochomic filtering with the dual color pLEDs on a Phase II Program.BENEFITS: Visible pLEDs are widely used and their market is rapidly growing in the flat panel display markets. NIR pLEDs have a more limited market, and PSI anticipates more success competing in that market. NIR emitters for IFF, and NVG displays are top military needs. The medical community is starting to develop imaging and diagnostic methods based upon the transparency of tissue to NIR light.
