Research abstract

Breault Research Organization, Inc. (BRO) proposes in Phase I to advance the design of transmitted wavefront test equipment that can be used to characterize deep concave shapes including ogives. The approach is based, in part, on interferometric concepts that have been used for decades, but it employs a novel combination of techniques that enable quick and accurate measurements of the transmitted wavefront error. Key to this approach is an innovative optical layout that does not require a complex null optic. In fact, it is possible to construct the system using all spherical optics. In addition, the approach is insensitive to misalignment. The basic development task in this Phase I proposal is to determine the appropriate tradeoff between system complexity and speed and to determine tolerances of the key components. In addition, the concept will be demonstrated with representative hardware.BENEFITS: The advantages of conformal optics have been well documented by the Precision Conformal Optics Technology program. This Phase I proposal addresses the issue of testing of deep concave shapes including ogives. While manufacturing technology for ogive domes has been advanced, cost effective manufacturing requires complementary advances in testing. Upon the successful completion of a phase II program, BRO will have developed an economical, cost effective tool for testing deep concave shapes. In addition to testing domes, the concept and algorithms can be adapted to test conformal windows as well.
