Research abstract

Spectral Sciences, Inc. (SSI), one of the key developers of SOCRATES-P, a DSMC flow, chemistry, and radiation signature code, proposes to extend the capability of SOCRATES-P to include transient plume-hard body interactions. The product will be the Maneuvers And Signatures of Interacting Vehicles (MASIV) Toolkit of end-to-end modeling software for generating high-fidelity, time-dependent spectral and spatial missile signatures of plume and hard-body interactions. Our proposed Toolkit relies on several key innovations shown feasible in Phase I. These innovations include: extending DSMC methodology to combine ‘free-cell’ and structured cell methods in a single simulation, combining the extended DSMC methodology with a fully coupled 6-DOF interface to include solid body motion and forces of the gas on the body, and implementing a seamless interface to existing radiation transport codes for generation of a total plume plus hard body missile signature. General interfaces to 6-DOF trajectory and thermal response model codes for two-way coupling of forces and heat fluxes will be implemented and validated to ensure consistent and accurate physics. The proposed effort also includes validation studies for a number of scenarios of interest, including complex motions and multiple complex bodies each with their own accelerations.
