Research abstract

The objective of this project is to create a brush, roll or spray, environmentally safe to apply, self-priming, semi-flexible, low VOC (maximum 100 g/l), high build epoxy barrier coating for corrosion protection with excellent adhesion to properly prepared atmospheric steel surfaces. This is responding to many needs of the Navy and other branches of the Armed Forces and civilian applications. In the course of Phase II Premier Coating Systems, Inc. proposes to evaluate the best formulations developed in Phase I using standard Industry practice. Following this evaluation, the epoxy barrier coating will be refined to the utmost available technology and materials available and final test criteria will be established for evaluation against the MIL-DTL-24441/19B, F159, Type III, Zinc Rich Epoxy Primer. Application of the selected formulation materials for laboratory and field testing will be evaluated in order to demonstrate that they meet the required epoxy barrier coating performance criteria of application properties, VOC, flexibility, elongation, adhesion, sag resistance, solvent resistance and corrosion resistance. A Product Data Sheet detailing the epoxy barrier coatings properties and its application procedures will then be drafted. BENEFITS: The corrosion protection for the many billions of dollars worth of atmospheric steel structures owned by the Navy that are subjected to corrosion and weathering degradation will represent substantial repetitive annual savings. In addition, similar installations belonging to other branches of the military and to municipal governments and organizations will benefit similarly from the use of the low VOC, zinc free, moisture and oxygen impermeable epoxy barrier coating. The development of this barrier epoxy primer with readily available commercially produced raw materials in conjunction with the ease of surface preparation and application already identified in preliminary testing indicate that the attractiveness of this new material is assured.
