Research abstract
The objective of this project is to create a brush, roll or spray, environmentally safe to apply, semi-flexible, low VOC (maximum 100 g/l), topcoat to serve as UV protection in the corrosion protection system. The topcoat should have excellent adhesion to the properly applied corrosion coat of the epoxy barrier coating or other prime and/or intermediate coats on atmospheric steel surfaces. This is responding to many needs of the Navy and other branches of the Armed Forces and civilian facilities owners. In the course of Phase II Premier Coating Systems, Inc. proposes to evaluate the best formulations developed in Phase I using standard Industry practice. Following this evaluation, the Low VOC Topcoat will be refined using the utmost available technology and materials available. Final test criteria will be established for evaluation against the MIL-PRF-85285C, Type II, Coating, Polyurethane, High Build Finish. Application of the selected formulation materials for laboratory and field testing will be evaluated in order to demonstrate that they meet the required Low VOC Topcoat performance criteria of application properties, VOC, dry time, pot life, gloss, flexibility, elongation, adhesion, sag resistance, opacity and weather resistance. A Product Data Sheet detailing the Low VOC Topcoat's properties and its application procedures will then be drafted. BENEFITS: The UV protection for the many billions of dollars worth of atmospheric steel structures owned by the Navy that are subjected to sunlight exposure and weathering degradation will represent substantial repetitive annual savings. In addition, similar installations belonging to other branches of the military and to municipal governments and organizations will benefit from the use of the moisture and oxygen impermeable Low VOC Topcoat. The development of this Low VOC Topcoat with readily available commercially produced raw materials, in conjunction with the ease of application already identified in preliminary testing, indicates that the attractiveness of this new material is assured.
