Research abstract

Capitalizing on AFRL’s Space Plug and Play Avionics (SPA) Initiative, Nu-Trek and SAIC will demonstrate the first SPA-U Self-Organizing dosimeters. The RADFET (small, low power) will measure localized, distributed total dose. The Particle Counting (PIN) Diode Dosimeter (PCDD) will determine the dose, dose rate, and electron and proton spectra. The SPA-U dosimeters include a sensor, SPA-U connector, SPA-U ASIM, and sensor specific data and code. The System processor includes the SPA-U host controller, the SDM application software, as well as a SPA-U connector. The SPA-U proof-of-principle PCDDs, that will be developed in Phase II, will measure >200keV electrons and >4MeV protons. Subsequent SPA-U PCDDs will extend the spectral range to measure >50keV electrons and >700keV protons. To demonstrate conservation of power, a survey SPA-U PCDD will be on at all times. It will turn on a distributed PCDD network when the count rate is high. Dosimeters will be designed for orbits specified during the execution of the contract. Program will include functional, plug-and-play, and self-organizing demonstrations. We will also perform developmental environmental testing. During Phase II we will plan acceptance testing and take steps to arrange for in-flight testing.
