Research abstract

The goal of the PERFORM Phase II effort is to develop a predictive model-based tool, and associated metrics, to assess the impact of simulator fidelity on training effectiveness. To achieve this goal, Aptima will deliver three primary products. First, we will deliver the PERFORM tool with associated functions and algorithms. Aptima will base the PERFORM tool on an updated categorization of the levels of fidelity associated with simulator subsystems. Aptima will identify the technological, cognitive, and perceptual factors that may mediate or moderate the effects of simulator fidelity on combat mission performance. An experiment will be conducted to validate the functions and algorithms that drive the PERFORM tool. Second, Aptima will deliver a set of performance measures, formally evaluated via a sensitivity analysis and determined to be effective at evaluating the impact of simulator fidelity on training effectiveness. Aptima will validate the measures utilizing archival and experimental data from simulators of varying levels of fidelity. Finally, Aptima will deliver a transition plan for extending the PERFORM tool to other training programs that utilize simulators to train operators. Phase III efforts will extend PERFORM’s capabilities to accommodate analyses and tradeoffs in fidelity associated with training simulators used in other domains.
