Research abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) proposes to develop an innovative blast wave measurement system that will characterize the three-dimensional nature of an explosive blast inside an enclosed space. The innovation of our approach is in the design of the sensor modules that provide three-directional time resolved measurements of the blast wave static and stagnation pressure and algorithms to characterize the blast wave environment. Using data to be obtained with our confined space blast wave measurements system in conjunction with automated data analysis algorithms, our system will characterize the blast wave source and essential desired blast wave parameters at surfaces. During this program, PSI will design and fabricate the measurement modules, integrate the blast characterization algorithm into post-processing software, and produce a prototype that will be demonstrated during actual live fire testing at a confined space blast facility. The system will provide an automated system compared to current labor intensive methods for blast measurements in an enclosed space.
