Research abstract

Significant advances have been made in sensor development, unmanned air platforms, and electronics system performance. However SOF tactical teams often do not receive near real time imagery intelligence and other sensor data relating to their area of operations. The objective of this project is to design and prove the feasibility of building a light weight, rugged, and low cost payload interface master module (PIMM) for use on a UAV. The PIMM will provide the ability to command, control, communicate, and cross-queue multiple ISR payloads onboard the UAV via commercial communications paths. The project will also include modification of a current SOF Ground Segment that can be used to control the sensor payload and receive the sensor data from the UAV. VIPMobile's proposed solution will include the use of high performance light weight computers running VIPMobile's custom software for image management and compression as well as bi-directional sensor control from the Ground Segment to the PIMM. The Ground Segment design will be influenced by VIPMobile's existing Enhanced Image Capture and Transfer (EICT) ruggedized handheld computer that was developed for SOCOM. Implementation of this project will allow state of the art UAV sensor data to be made fully available to SOF tactical teams.
