Research abstract
The Middle East desert conditions have illustrated the limited capabilities of the current engine intake air filters to provide adequate service life under heavy dust load conditions. Every vehicle manufacturer and government agency that deals with vehicle performance have been pursuing a solution to this situation. Filter media changes can achieve a few more hours of service and pre-cleaners might net the same result but these options all have very limited improvement. Greenlees Filter has offered a long term solution by proposing a self cleaning filter using an active sonic cleaning design.Industrial dust collectors employ similar systems to get months and years of service from filters that would only get hours without them. Adapting this technology to the limited space available on a vehicle provides the technical challenge and integrating it into a complete vehicle system is the logistical objective.
