Research abstract

Seacoast Science Inc. has provided proof-of-concept technical results and assembled several demonstration prototypes that detect drug lab chemicals for delivery to program managers. Proposed Phase II advanced prototype detector systems consist of a chemicapacitor sensor array, a radio for wireless communication and a rugged weatherproof, lightweight system designed for long-term battery operation. Our MEMS chemicapacitor technology utilizes an array of surface micromachined capacitors, coated with chemoselective polymer materials optimized for the volatile chemicals commonly used in drug processing. Near the end of this proposed Phase II program Seacoast Science will demonstrate an advanced prototype detector set that meets all the requirements to serve as a system for sniffing out illicit drug processing laboratories. The demonstration will consist of four detector units placed up to ¼ mile from a central receiver. These detectors, packaged in weatherproof housings, will monitor the environment and transmit information such as chemical detected, concentration, humidity, ambient temperature, and battery lifetime. The Seacoast system will have a modular design enabling the incorporation of additional sensor technologies as needed for tracking down suspicious chemicals while mounted clandestinely for long term monitoring in suspected drug lab locations.
