Research abstract

This program will develop a lightweight highly-reliable regenerative power source for installation by SOF at remote sensor sites. Front Edge Technology’s (FET’s) approach is to integrate ultra-high-reliability solar cells and FET’s new long-life solid-state energy-storage-devices into a robust lightweight “Power Module”. The module components will be highly robust and able to withstand driving rains, severe drops, etc. FET’s design for the Phase II Power Module measures only 4.3”x7.7”x0.5”, weighs 1.5 pounds, can produce up to 50 Wh/day, and is projected to have 4-year mission reliability of 99+% in a wide range of environments (e.g. desserts, jungle, or mountains). In Phase I of the program, FET conducted design studies, produced a breadboard, conducted simulated life testing, and developed an optimized design. In Phase II, full-size fully-operational prototypes will be fabricated and tested.
